According to Mr. Aiman Moner, our watch repair expert who interacts with customers on a daily basis, most people just associate the oyster case with waterproofness, which is true, but there is more to it. There are four main pillars, which make the oyster case waterproof. Each element works together to create a single hermetic seal and prevent water damage in watches.

The Hermetic Middle Case
The most important component of the system is the Monoblock middle case. It is made from a solid block of metal rather than assembled from stamped parts. This is machined from 904L steel (Oystersteel), 18k gold, or 950 platinum, depending on the model. There are no seams for water to exploit because it is a single, uninterrupted piece of metal.
When I inspect a genuine Monoblock case under the loupe, there is no seam line where the middle case meets. It is one piece of metal. On watches that fail our water test, it is almost never the case itself that leaks; the case is the part that never gives up, Aiman Moner adds.
The Fluted Caseback

The back of the case is a fluted caseback that is screwed down tightly onto the middle case using proprietary Rolex tools. This tool-only design means the caseback compresses evenly against its gasket, so no moisture can penetrate from behind. You can’t open it without the right equipment. It is the job of a professional watchmaker.

The Crystal and Bezel
The sapphire crystal is hermetically sealed against the middle case, secured by the bezel. This locks the front of the watch as tightly as the back, completing an unbroken barrier around the entire movement.
The History: Why is it Called the Rolex Oyster?
Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex, patented the world’s first waterproof wristwatch case in 1926. He named it the “Oyster” precisely because of that clamping-shell analogy: a case that seals shut to protect what is inside. It was a genuine breakthrough at a time when moisture and dust routinely destroyed delicate watch movements.
However, a patent alone does not convince the public. So in 1927, English swimmer Mercedes Gleitze crossed the English Channel wearing a Rolex Oyster. After roughly 10 hours in cold open water, the watch emerged in perfect working order and completely dry inside.

Mind the Gasket Aging
The rubber gaskets that create the hermetic seal dry out and harden over time, gradually losing their ability to block water. If you swim or dive with your watch, have it pressure-tested every 1 to 2 years to confirm the seals are still intact.
