What is watch engraving?
Watch engraving is an etching of a text or a design on a stainless steel watch. While it is even possible on gold watches, it is found to be a rather common practice with steel models. This text or design allows people to customize and personalise their watches as per their liking.
If the watch is a wedding gift, people get the wedding date engraved on it. Five people who started a company together might get identical watches with the company logo engraved on the case back. Basically, anything that can make the already special watch even more special for you. These watch engravings were very common on casebacks. However, as technology advancements took place, people started to experiment even further.
These days, you can engrave the case, clasp, or even the bracelet of the watch. With a full watch engraving, you can get a particular design made giving your watch a completely unique look.
In short, a watch engraving can be considered as a tattoo for your watch. As you would only get a tattoo that would mean something significant, similarly you would engrave something on your watch that means something to you.
Laser Engraving on Watches: How is it done?
A few decades ago, watch engravings were done by hand by using a hardened steel tool to draw the design or the text on the watch. But thanks to the technical advancements we have had over the years, these engravings are now done using laser beams. The laser burns the material, guided by a software, which results in a cleaner and more precise engraving. The precision is just unmatched and it allows you to draw nearly anything on the watch’s surface.
If you are getting watch engraving on multiple watches, you can also be assured that there will be consistency among them if laser engraving technique is used.
Can you get rid of a watch engraving?
Yes, you can get rid of a watch engraving. Whether the engraving is on the case back to the buckle of the watch, you can always get it removed. An experienced watchmaker can remove an engraving by either brushing or polishing the surface. However, it all depends on what kind of engraving it is.
If the engraving is shallow, it’s easier to remove. Deeper engravings may be more challenging. But if the engraving is just on one part of the watch like the caseback, you can always change the caseback to get rid of the engraving.
