How to clean your wristwatch at home?

Cleaning a wristwatch is not all that complicated. To begin with, you can always use a soft microfibre cloth to clean your watch of any marks. This is something that you can do almost every day before wearing your watch. But when it comes to properly cleaning it, it is fine even if you do it once or twice a month. Here’s how you can do it.

Inspect the watch first

Before you begin with the cleaning process, it is extremely important to inspect your watch first. You need to be sure that your watch is water-resistant. Usually, watches have the water resistance rating printed on the dial. If not, you can always check the company website to see whether the watch is water-resistant or not. If you are not sure about this, you should rather take your watch to a watch expert for cleaning.

Now that you know your watch is water resistant, you are still not ready. This is where the inspection part begins. You need to check the glass of the watch if it is not chipped from anywhere. A chipped glass allows water to get inside, which will lead to damaging your watch. If you have chipped or cracked glass, you should get it replaced immediately.

Lastly, you also need to check if the crown of the watch is closed properly. Once you have done all those checks, you can move to the next step.

Gather the Supplies

In order to get ready to clean your watch, you need a few things. These are listed as follows.

  • Clean Tap Water: Use lukewarm water to avoid extreme temperature changes.
  • Soft Bristle Brush: A soft toothbrush will help remove dirt and grime from between the links of the bracelet.
  • Mild Soap: Use a gentle soap without harsh chemicals.
  • Microfiber Cloth: For drying and cleaning the watch.

Cleaning the Watch

Follow these steps to thoroughly clean your watch at home.

  1. Remove the Strap – If your watch has a leather strap, it is recommended to remove it and keep it aside. Even if it has a steel or gold bracelet, it is a good practice to remove it and wash it separately.
  2. Rinse it under Tap Water – You can just keep your watch under regular clean tap water and give it a good wash. Just make sure you do not open the crown during this process.
  3. Brush the watch and bracelet with soap – Use a soft bristle brush and some mild soap to rub the watch and the bracelet. Don’t be too harsh and don’t be too gentle either. You need to apply the right amount of pressure while cleaning with the brush.
  4. Rince the watch again – Now that you have cleaned your watch, you can rinse it again under tap water again. Make sure all soap particles get washed away.
  5. Dry with Microfiber Cloth – Use a microfiber cloth to dry the watch and clean it.

Depending on how dirty the watch was before, the results can be astonishing.

Once you have done the cleaning, just make sure no water went inside the watch during the process. If you can see any water particles inside, you should rush to a watch repair shop near you.
